This year marks the sixth consecutive year that American Honda Motor Co., Inc. will be a presenting sponsor of the 16th annual L.A. Marathon and its fifth year as title sponsor of the Acura L.A. Bike Tour. Honda's continuing involvement reflects the company's on-going commitment to the greater Los Angeles community.

"American Honda is honored to support the L.A. Marathon and Acura L.A. Bike Tour on an on-going basis. These events have a positive impact on diverse communities throughout Southern California," said Eric Conn, assistant vice president of National Advertising for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "The L.A. Marathon and Acura L.A. Bike Tour build teamwork by bringing people together to celebrate commitment -- the commitment of participants, volunteers, spectators and those who raise funds for worthwhile local charities."

"We are fortunate to have a successful partnership with American Honda," said Dr. William A. Burke, president of the Los Angeles Marathon. "The L.A. Marathon and Acura L.A. Bike Tour are two events that bring out the best in participants and unite the peoples of Los Angeles. The theme of this year's marathon is 'A year to shine,' and it should inspire an even greater sense of community."

With runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes from all 50 states and more than 100 nations, this year's L.A. Marathon and Acura L.A. Bike Tour are expected to attract a combined total of more than 38,000 participants.

In addition to American Honda's sponsorship of the L.A. Marathon and Acura L.A. Bike Tour, the company is also involved in the following marathon-related activities:

Community Outreach -- Honda donates more than 2,000 pairs of new running shoes to members of Students Run L.A. (SRLA), and Honda associates are involved in fundraising efforts to support the organization. SRLA helps at-risk students focus their energies on positive activities by training for and running in the L.A. Marathon. Twenty-six students, members of the YES-PAL organization, will receive new mountain bikes donated by Acura. The students were chosen for academic excellence, a commitment to safe cycling and membership in YES-PAL School Cycling Clubs, which bring rules of the road, smart riding techniques and mentoring by L.A. School Police and Los Angeles Police Officers to the students of Los Angeles Unified School District.

Quality of Life Expo -- Honda will participate in the pre-marathon Quality of Life Expo at the Los Angeles Convention Center by displaying several its latest products never before seen in Los Angeles. Such products include the FCX-V3 fuel cell vehicle, Model-X concept vehicle, the Acura RS-X, and Honda's new personal watercraft. The Expo is the last chance for participants to register for the Los Angeles Marathon and Acura L.A. Bike Tour. It will take place March 1-3.

Honda Associate Teamwork -- Once again, hundreds of Honda associates will staff the L.A. Marathon's Mile 14 water station and provide refreshments and encouragement to the more than 23,000 participants. Honda associates will also staff the Acura L.A. Bike Tour's finish line. The bike tour immediately proceeds the March 4 L.A. Marathon. Other associates are working on L.A. Marathon volunteer committees that range from pace car duty to working with Los Angeles-area community organizations.

Honda Running Club -- Members of the Honda Running Club from Honda companies throughout the world including Japan, California, Georgia and Ohio will participate once more in this year's Marathon. The Running Club provides associates with a comprehensive marathon-training program.

Prizes -- The male and female winners of the Los Angeles Marathon each will receive a top-of-the-line 2001 Honda Accord EX V-6 sedan, donated by American Honda.
