"HR-1 Series"

  • Honda's engine for the 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series is designated the HR-1 Series Turbo V-8. The engine is an evolutionary development of last year's HR-0, when Gil de Ferran won the company's fifth consecutive CART driver's championship.

  • The HR-1 is designed to meet CART's new turbocharger boost limit of 37 inches Mercury absolute. Track testing of the HR-1 engine began in December

  • Last year's highlights for the HR-0 engine included de Ferran's title and world closed-course speed record, Honda's 50th Champ Car victory, eight race wins and 11 pole positions.

  • With the HRS engine in 1999, Honda-powered drivers won a total of 14 races and finished 1-2-3 in the driver's championship for the third consecutive season. Juan Montoya won the CART title, and also was series Rookie of the Year. Dario Franchitti and Paul Tracy rounded out the top three.

  • Using the HRK engine in 1998, Honda-powered drivers won a total of 13 races and finished 1-2-3 in the PPG Cup title chase for the second consecutive season. Alex Zanardi won his second title in a row for Target/Chip Ganassi Racing, followed by teammate Jimmy Vasser and Team KOOL Green's Dario Franchitti.

  • With the 1996 HRH specification engine, Honda won its first CART Manufacturer's Championship, recording a total of 11 victories in 16 races. Six of these victories were 1-2 finishes for Honda-powered drivers. In 1995, Honda drivers using the HRH series engine scored Honda's first win, first pole, led a race and set fastest race lap for the first time.
