California Allows Alternative Fuel Vehicles to use HOV Lanes

Vehicles powered by either compressed natural gas or electricity are now able to use freeway carpool lanes in California with only one occupant, rather than two as required by law of all gasoline powered vehicles. This is the latest incentive for drivers to adopt environmentally friendly technology.

New legislation allows High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes to be used by single-occupant electric and alternative fuel-powered vehicles. This includes all California Air Resources Board (CARB) certified Zero-Emission Vehicles (ZEV), Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles (ULEV) and Super Low-Emission Vehicles (SULEV) powered by alternative fuel.

The Honda Civic GX natural gas-powered vehicle and EV Plus electric vehicle are both included on the list of vehicles currently qualified for this allowance.
